Want To Buy a Home?: Create Calm Not Chaos

Whether you hope to buy a house tomorrow, next year, or sometime in the future, what you do today will determine if home buying will be a calm or chaotic process.

If someone asked you for your last two years W-2 statements, would you be able to easily find them? Or would you have to thumb through a disorganized file system or stacks of papers just to lay your hands on the papers?

Before you start dreaming of a new home, the first thing you need to do is get organized.

Files Help Keep You Organized

These easy steps will help you get a bit more organized and reduce chaos:

(Note: Always put the most current papers in the front of the file and make sure you staple multiple paper documents together.)

1. Purchase a file cabinet or file box, with hanging file folders, tabs, Manilla folders, and a stapler.

2. Create Tabs for hanging files.

Identification (Passport, Birth Certificate, and any other I.D. that you don’t carry with you)

Paycheck Stubs

Bank Statements (Create a folder for each account that you have: checking, savings, etc.)

W-2’s (Create a folder for each year, i.e. 2010, 2009, 2008)

3. Put bills, warranties and other valuable paperwork in a separate file drawer or box.
