Why Invest in Memphis, Tennessee?
April 26th, 2011 -- by Ryan TuckerAlthough Memphis may have a reputation for barbeque, Elvis Presley, and being home to FedEx, there is a lot more about the River City that makes it the perfect place to buy investment property.
And with property available in a wide variety of locations (downtown, midtown, suburbs, rural), you can find the perfect spot.
Memphis is the 17th largest city in the United States, and has a population of 1.2 million. And because of the economic downturn, there are hundreds of foreclosed homes on the Memphis market and numbers of families needing affordable rental housing. (Go to Money.CNN to see where Tennessee ranks in foreclosures compared to other states).
Several Fortune 500 companies, including FedEx, AutoZone, ServiceMaster, Thomas & Betts, Medtronic, and International Paper, have headquarters in Memphis. Known as “America’s Distribution Center,” Memphis boasts an international airport (also one of FedEx’s main hubs), lots of trucking, river, and train traffic, and prestigious medical institutions. And in the next year, two big companies – Electrolux and Mitsubishi Electric – will move into town, bringing new jobs and a boost to the economy.
